LYMAN MUSEUM POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: Archivist (part-time)

DEPARTMENT: Archives

JOB SUMMARY: Is responsible for management and administration of all aspects of the Museum’s Archives as well as records management for the Museum. This position reports directly to the Curator of Collections and Exhibits.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

o Provides limited reference services to internal and external customers by providing access, interpreting finding aids, giving instruction on the proper handling of materials, and providing knowledge of the archival collections relevant to the individual researcher’s needs. May respond in person, by telephone, e-mail, or fax. May refer researchers to other resources, as needed.

o Processes new acquisitions and additions to the Archives. o Processes and collects fees for Archives services from customers.

o Maintains and preserves archival collections to appropriate conservation standards. Preserves archival materials by identifying endangered materials and level of conservation work needed; provides basic repair and preventive preservation. o Implements Museum’s records management system and procedures.

o Maintains archival collections management information, including up-to-date shelf list inventory and transfer records.

o Provides archival and general assistance in developing both permanent and special exhibits. o Trains and supervises volunteers and/or interns in the Archives.

o When directed, researches grant sources and writes grant proposals. This description does not limit the duties and/or responsibilities of this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Minimum Educational Requirements: Earned M.L.S./M.L.I.S. or M.A. degree in History or other relevant field. C.A. preferred.

Experience in archival processing and administration; knowledge of contemporary archival and records management principles and practices.

Knowledge of descriptive cataloguing principles, USMARC format, and archives use of the Internet; knowledge of Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and HTML.

Training or experience in conservation of archival materials.

High level of competence in computer database management, word processing, and Internet use; knowledge of relevant software programs such as Past Perfect and Microsoft Word.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.

Excellent organizational skills, attentiveness to detail and accuracy, and the ability to work equally effectively with minimal supervision and in a team setting. Good research capabilities. Ability to lift 40 lbs. and to climb ladders.
