Accounting Manager for Non-Profit
The Kona Historical Society, a 501c3 non-profit museum and outreach organization, is seeking a full-time Accounting Manager at our Kealakekua headquarters. The position comes with medical and other benefits as well as possibilities for advancement.
Position Summary:
The Accounting Manager is responsible for performing highly specialized accounting work required to maintain the Society’s general ledger. Working under the direction of the Executive Director, the Accounting Manger directs and coordinates the daily activities of the accounting to quickly and accurately record the revenues, expenditures, assets, and liabilities. The Accounting Manager is also responsible for preparing annual financial statements.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
- Overseeing the day-to-day financial management of KHS. Includes monitoring and co-creation of the budget, monitoring the general ledger, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Restricted and Unrestricted fund administration
- Working closely with an HR and payroll company to produce payroll and payroll taxes, personnel records.
- Maintenance of grant files, insurance, and business tax/legal files.
- Assists with annual audits or CPA reviews (if applicable).
- Works closely with the Executive Director to assist in development of finance and accounting policies and procedures.
- Assists Board of Directors finance committee, prepares for and attends Board meetings. Prepares monthly financial reports: Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss, Program, and others.
- Preparation of Annual Financial Statements.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and best practices.
- Ability to work both independently, with little supervision, and as part of a team.
- Motivated detail oriented self-starter.
- Knowledge of operating and capital budget concepts.
- Ability to analyze financial data and to prepare accurate reports in a timely fashion.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft suite applications.
- Proficiency with Quickbooks or similar automated financial management system.
- *** Understanding of Governmental Accounting Standards (GASB) preferred.
- *** Strong knowledge of governmental/non-profit accounting principles and procedures preferred.
- *** Strong knowledge of fund accounting, and a thorough understanding of small non-profit or governmental accounting principles preferred.
- *** Knowledge of Project Accounting principles preferred.
Education and Work Experience:
- A degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance is preferred, or comparable work experience would also be considered.
- At least four years of experience in accounting including financial statement preparation, budgeting, payroll, purchasing, accounts payable, and accounts receivable, or the equivalent.
- Experience working with an automated financial management system.
- *** Experience working in Non-Profit or Governmental Accounting highly desired.
- *** Experience developing financial policies and procedures preferred.
- *** Experience working with Grant Compliance and Grant Fund Management preferred.
- *** Experience working in a Museum setting preferred.
