Casual Education Interpreter – Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum

Work Bishop Museum “Sleepover” and “Museum After Dark” programs, in which visitors spend the evening at the Museum. Greet sleepover visitors, provide programming, handle operational details such as food delivery, monitor student behavior and safety. Present and assist with daytime programs for general public and students. Must be available to work Sundays and some Saturdays. Provide high quality interpretive programs and personal learning experience for museum visitors and school groups in the Castle Building, Hawaiian Hall, Science Adventure Center, Watumull Planetarium and/or other exhibit gallery areas. Assist other education department staff in department projects in and out of the office.

Physical Demands: Must be able to stay at museum overnight to run sleepover programs, which includes sleeping on concrete or carpeted floor. Position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, run, climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and handle. Computer use and crafts projects require fingering ability and hand-eye coordination. Physical strength sufficient to push, pull, and lift supplies and equipment weighing up to 50lbs and carry up to 100 lbs.needed. Must be able to communicate verbally with students, teachers, volunteers and co-workers, both in person and over the telephone. Must be able to read and write material of varying lengths, including labels, memos, schedules, and curriculum material. Visual requirements include good-to excellent vision, a wide field of vision and depth perception. Working environment may involve exposure to hot, humid wet, noisy or dusty conditions. Must be able to work in low-light areas (planetarium, planetarium lobby, campus at night).

Desired Education and Experience: High School degree or equivalent in training and experience to successfully perform the job. Must be able to handle multiple projects and maintain composure. Must have experience working with children and presenting to a range of audiences.

Machines and Equipment Used: Computer, audiovisual equipment, LCD projector, iPad/Tablet, video camera, telephone. Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Compensation: $10-11/hr
Hours: Casual, 18 hours/week; Must be available to work 1-2 evenings per week (sleep over at the Museum), Sundays during the day and some Saturdays.
